“Abject,” from the MerwinAsia book, Two Stories from Korea, is a story about a local pharmacist whose wife losses their child and then grapples with the subsequent pain through her newfound faith in God. When she is challenged by the concept of forgiveness and justice, she faces a test that her faith and psyche are unable to withstand. Published in 1985, “Abject” was adapted for the screen in 2007 by Lee Chang-dong as Secret Sunshine starring Jeon Do-yeon and Song Kang-ho. At the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, the film was nominated for the Palme D’Or.
